| Black and Veatch – Black and Veatch Explorer Post consists of 100+ Kansas City metropolitan area high school students ages 14-19 that have shown interest in math and science. The Post is run by a group of student officers under the supervision of advisors who are B&V employees. Black & Veatch has sponsored an engineering Explorer Post for more than 30 years. The Post holds meetings monthly. The student officers dedicate each month to a different discipline of engineering. Meetings typically include a presentation from a guest speaker about a topic pertaining to the chosen discipline as well as some sort of hands on activity or contest that will also illustrate concepts of the discipline being discussed. Students also tour a different engineering facility monthly. Black and Veatch Explorer Post has hosted speakers from Garmin Aviation, George Butler & Associates, Sprint, KC Power and Light, and many other companies. In the past year we have toured: hotel construction sites, recording studios, FM radios, Hallmark, Colgate-Palmolive Plant, KU Medical Center, Kansas Speedway, and others. The Post also explores engineering outside Kansas City. Once a year, we organize a super activity for 4 days to visit other science and technological centers in another City. Some of the cities we have visited include Chicago, Atlanta, Washington DC, Houston, and San Francisco. We have had the opportunity to visit amazing places such as NASA and their mission control center, The Battleship Texas, the Smithsonian Institute Museums, national monuments throughout Washington, DC, Norfolk - OP Sail 2000 parade of ships, Baltimore ESPN zone, American History Museum, World of Coca - Cola, CNN and a taping of Talk Back Live , the Golden Gate Bridge, Intel Museum, and the Berkeley Lab. Cerner associates come from many diverse backgrounds and collectively form the nation’s leading healthcare information technology company. The Post is organized so that Explorers in our program choose the topics they want to study, and the Cerner associate advisors help them find information and coordinate projects/activities around those topics. Since it was founded in the spring of 1999, the Cerner Post has provided an outlet for over 30 young adults per year to explore careers in information science and information technology. Some of the program’s highlights are a summer internship program, annual tours of the Cerner Vision Center on campus and the Data Center in Lee’s Summit. Cerner has also hosted the “Exploring KC at Night” program for the past two years by opening up the Cerner Associate Center and allowing Explorers participating in that event to come and utilize our on-campus gymnasium. The post at Cerner gives many young adults, regardless of previous skill or experience levels, opportunities to develop their leadership skills, learn about careers in IS/IT, and meet other like-minded young adults. The Cerner Explorer Post currently meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of every month except June, July, and August (3rd Tuesday). Meetings run from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. For more information, please call the Post’s information at 816-201-5802.
