Truman Medical Center Lakewood – Truman Medical Center (TMC) Lakewood, in Eastern Jackson County, invites area high school students to explore healthcare careers with Medical Explorer Post 2950. Meetings are held monthly October through May on Thursday evening, and feature in-depth study of a different area of healthcare. Students tour hospital departments and learn about the career options available to them. Hospital staff and healthcare providers share their experience, training, and job duties providing students first-hand knowledge of their day to day activities and responsibilities. Students often report that they learned about careers they didn’t know existed. Recent programs have featured our surgery center with students learning suturing techniques and pediatrics, which included a field trip to tour the neonatal unit at Children’s Mercy Hospital.

Students have an opportunity to assume leadership roles in the Post, perform community service hours, or shadow an employee in a specific hospital department. Student leaders serve on the TMC Lakewood Medical Explorer Advisory Board and help plan programs, special activities, and run meetings

The Heart of America Council, BSA (Boy Scouts of America) awarded TMC Lakewood the 2001 Exploring Cluster Program of the Year in Healthcare. Student involvement was the key to this award. We are particularly proud of students who have been accepted into the UMKC (University of Missouri, Kansas City) School of Medicine and other healthcare programs at area colleges and universities. The knowledge they gained through Medical Explorers helped them focus on a future career in healthcare.
