Royal Gathering of Eagle Scouts ~ an opportunity for ALL Scouts to celebrate!

A Pitch for Scouting / 2010 Eagle Celebration

August 30, 2010

Kauffman Stadium

Major League Baseball will be joining the Boy Scouts of America to celebrate its 100th Anniversary.  On August 30th, thousands of Scouts - particularly Eagle Scouts - will converge on Kauffman Stadium at the Royal Gathering of Eagles!  On that evening, we are envisioning the largest assemblage of Eagle Scouts ever seen in the Midwest.  We're inviting every Scout and Scouter in the Heart of America Council to join us!!

Kauffman Stadium and Scouting share a strong tie through the late owner of the Royals, Eagle Scout Ewing M. Kauffman.  It is fitting that we hold this special event in the stadium that bears his name.

The August 30th game will have a distinctly Scouting flavor.  A Scout will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.  A special presentation on the field will recognize 10 Eagle Scouts as they receive the first Ewing M. Kauffman Eagle Scout Awards for living the Scout Oath and Law, and emulating Mr. Kauffman's values in their personal and business lives.

Tickets for Eagle Scouts - regardless of where you earned your Eagle - are complementary, courtesy of the Kansas City Royals.  You MUST register to attend by visiting the website listed below.  Tickets for family members, Scouts and Scouters can be purchased in advance at the discounted price of $5.00 each.

For 100 years, baseball and Scouting have been two of America's most treasured traditions - teaching the values of teamwork and integrity.  Among those who were Scouts at one time, include Hall of Famers Hank Aaron, Stan Musial, and Joe DiMaggio.

A Year of Celebration at Naish and Bartle and Day Camp

Camp and Unit programs will recognize Scouting's History

Summer 2010

During each camping session at the H. Roe Bartle and Theodore Naish Reservations, specially designed programs will commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Scouting and to celebrate 100 years of our outdoor camping program, including:

  • Signs and banners recognizing the Centennial
  • Birthday cakes at all sessions
  • Commemorative flag ceremonies and campfire moments
  • Visits by historical scouting VIP's
  • Legacy Ashes containers with Scouting history
  • Historical facts along hiking trails
  • Special shirts and patches
  • Outpost programs with historical themes
  • Geocaching programs that highlight the history
  • Historical Merit Badges
  • At Naish, the opening of a historical time capsule.  Each Scout can bring one item to include in a new capsule to be buried
  • Camp staff reunions
  • Alumni campers reunions

Additionally, troops, packs, and crews should plan to hold their own celebrations at camp to recognize their Scouting legacy!

Here are some ideas:

  • Invite unit alumni to join you for Family Day
  • Find and invite the oldest Scout who has camped with your unit at summer camp to join you on Family Day
  • Invite grandparents of Scouts and ask that they share their Scouting and camping experiences
  • Use your resources and imagination to share your unit’s legacy with the youth members of today

Get in the Game! Geocaching -- Race to 2010!

    Ongoing

Saturday, March 6, marks the start of Race to 2010 which is part of the Get in the Game 100th Anniversary geocaching program. Pinewood derby cars representing councils, districts, and units across the country will race towards the 2010 National Scout Jamboree.

Anyone can be part of the race! All you need is a pinewood derby car and a Travel Bug®. If you don’t have one, you can purchase a Travel Bug for just $4.25 from Geocaching.com. Essentially, a Travel Bug is a dog tag with a unique tracking number. Each is associated with its own page on Geocaching.com where people can track its progress as it passes from person to person or cache to cache. The Travel Bug can be put into an existing cache (large enough to hold the derby car), or you can create an entirely new cache to start it off.

In addition to the online posting, you can attach a laminated card to your car that talks more about Scouting in your community and what your goals are with this Travel Bug. We’ve provided an example is below, but feel free to customize it to make it your own. All of this information can also be found by clicking here.

Grab a derby car and join in the Race to 2010!  This program provides us with an incredible opportunity to get Scouting out in front of thousands of people.  Plus, we’ll have a lot of fun while we’re at it!

    SCOUT-OUT Hunger Food Drive

    September 11, 2010 and September 18, 2010

In cooperation with Harvester's Food Bank, the Heart of America Council will conduct the largest food drive in the history of Kansas City as we involve 35,000 youth members and 19,000 adult volunteers in a council-wide project to help the less fortunate.  Far too many families in our community lead a fragile existence and often face difficult choices between paying for food, shelter, utilities, or health care.  An alarming number of the people who are hungry are children.

Here is how this service project works:

    • Work with your district's Good Turn Service Plan Coordinator to choose a collection area close to your unit’s meeting place.  (Since all units are expected to participate, you may not get your first choice of geographic area to canvas.)
    • Once you have selected an area, work with your unit committee to develop a plan to ensure that every house on each street is covered.
    • At your September roundtable pick up bags from your district’s Good Turn Service Project Coordinator.
    • On Saturday, September 11, canvas your assigned area by hanging a bag on the door of each home.  Be sure that you cover every assigned street
    • On Saturday, September 18, return to your assigned neighborhood to collect the bags of food. To be sure that no houses are missed have the same Scouts cover the same streets on both weekends.

Once you have completely covered your area, take the bags of food to your district’s food drop off site.  Each district will have different drop off sites. Contact your Good Turn Service Project Coordinator to find out the location of your drop off site. As a default plan, all Price Choppers in the area are participating and food can be taken there.

For units that can only participate on one weekend, bags can be dropped off on a Friday and picked up on a Saturday. You will need to conduct the Good Turn on one of the two selected weekends, September 11 or September 18.

Make arrangements with your Good Turn Service Project Coordinator as soon as possible to get your first choice area to canvas!  For questions and more information about your district’s plan contact your district Good Turn Service Project Coordinators listed below.

    Centennial Campout

    September 24-26, 2010

HOAC's Centennial Campground - adjacent to Naish Scout Reservation

This not-to-be missed, weekend-long camping experience is the highlight of our 100th Anniversary Celebration.  It is for every Tiger Cub, Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Venturer, Explorer, Scouter, Scouting Parent and Scouting Alumnus in the Heart of America Council.  The program is still in the development stage, but we already know the weekend will feature hundreds of hands-on Scouting and community displays, Scouting challenges and activity areas, all culminating with an evening stage show and fireworks.

Many of the logistics are still being formulated, but at the present time we know the following:

    • ALL Troops, Crews, and Posts will be camping Friday & Saturday night
    • Because of the limits on available Cub Scout camping space at Camp Naish, Cub Scout packs have the option of attending for the day or camping Saturday night.  Cub Scout camping spaces will be reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis during registration.
    • Meals will be provided (Troops, Crews, and Posts camping will be provided 4 meals, Cub Scout Packs camping will be provided 3 meals, and units attending for the day will receive 2 meals)
    • The only camping equipment allowed will be tents and other personal gear.  Cooking gear and other unit equipment will not be permitted.  Set-up of unit camping sites will be scheduled and completed prior to the event.
    • ALL parking will be off-site and bus transportation will be provided.  There will not be vehicle access to the Extravaganza site during the event.
    • The estimated cost at the present time is $25-$30 per person for Troops, Crews, and Posts camping (includes 4 meals and bus transportation), $20-$25 per person for Cub Scout Packs camping (includes 3 meals), $15-20 per per person attending for the day (includes 2 meals).  The final prices will be announced in April along with additional program and registration information.

    Community Good Turn Days

    April 10, 2010 and April 17, 2010

The Boy Scout slogan, "Do a Good Turn Daily," hearkens back more than a century, when an unknown English Scout helped U.S. businessman William Boyce find his way in the London fog and then refused payment.  In doing so, that young Scout's service made an impression that led to the establishment of the Boy Scouts of America.

From tree planting to park improvements, from distribution of energy efficient light bulbs to collection of food for the needy, Scouts will roll up their sleeves and help make their community a better place to live.  Each Heart of America Council District will conduct a service project or projects on April 10th and/or 17th in their home communities as part of the 100th Anniversary celebration of the Boy Scouts of America.

    BSA Motorsports

    May 1, 2010

    Kansas Speedway

At speeds that surpass 200 miles per hour, IndyCar racing offers fans nonstop thrills. So it’s a natural fit with the Boy Scouts of America, an organization that’s been serving up fast-paced adventure for 100 years. The No. 19 IndyCar, a joint venture between the BSA and Dale Coyne Racing, will make its debut on March 14 in Brazil. The season runs through October with 17 total races, including May 1st at the Road Runner Turbo Indy 300 at Kansas Speedway.

This offers two unique opportunities for Scouting. First, the BSA’s logo and colors are all over this sharp-looking ride, and Scouts will play a role in opening ceremonies at several IndyCar races. Second, Scouting units from across the country will get the chance to see the car up close and meet the driver and crew—all while learning about the math and science behind open-wheel racing.

2010 BSA Major Gifts Art Tour

    May 10-12, 2010

    Liberty Memorial

The Heart of America Council is pleased that the BSA National Major Gifts Art Tour will make a stop in Kansas City. The artwork will be on display at the Liberty Memorial. This venue will enable us to open the exhibit to the public, in addition to conducting special events for major contributors to our council’s annual campaign and endowment. Scouts and Scouters from surrounding councils are invited to join us for this unique opportunity to view 20 Scout-related art works by Norman Rockwell and Joseph Csatari.

From 1918 through 1976, Norman Rockwell was the official artist for the Boy Scouts of America. Starting in 1964 and through today, Joseph Csatari, the protégé of Rockwell, has been the artist for the Boy Scouts of America. These artists have recorded the history of Scouting in America - from campouts, hikes, and Pinewood Derby races to public service projects. Their artwork celebrates the boyhood joys of Scouting while illustrating a code of honor and ideals that has shaped generations of young men.

The Liberty Memorial Museum will be open free of charge on Tuesday, May 11 between 5:00 and 9:00 pm. Visitors will also have an opportunity to visit the Memorial’s Observation Tower.

Artwork can be viewed by the general public and our Scouting friends during the following times:

    • May 10 between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm
    • May 11 between 9:00 am and 9:00 pm
